On 5 January 2026, an Elron train arrived at Valga railway station, officially opening the Tartu-Ria express train line. This is an important step in strengthening the role of Valga as a border town and railway hub.
The arriving train was greeted by the dancers of Studio JOY, and emphasizing the importance of the train connection, the Mayor of Valga Municipality Mart Kase and the Chairman of Valka Municipal Council Vents Armands Krauklis gave a speech.

Regular train service Tallinn-Tartu-Riia starts on 12 January 2026.
Tallinn-Ria direction:

Riga-Tallinn direction:
The train departs Riga at 07.38.
The train departs from Vala at 10.04
The train departs from Tartu at 11.45
The train arrives in Tallinn at 13.57
The Tartu-Riia journey takes less than 4 hours and the fare starts from around €19.
The launch of the train service will be carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change, the Ministry of Regional Development and Agriculture, the City of Tartu and Latvian and Lithuanian passenger train operators.
